Friends and Supporters,
Two years ago I started my campaign for mayor by saying we must look ahead and prepare for new challenges and new opportunities for Lubbock. Little did anyone know the challenges that were just over the horizon for Lubbock and the nation.
I’ve worked to keep Lubbock’s finances on an even keel, despite a recession second only to the Great Depression. Some decried our conservative approach, but that philosophy served our hometown well. While other cities are cutting jobs and services, Lubbock has not only weathered the storm, we have also taken care of long-neglected infrastructure needs.
Projects that were completed or, are now well underway, range from replacing 70-year-old water mains, rebuilding or adding streets across the city, supporting economic development and public safety needs and including LIA improvements and additional fire stations to the list. We also looked after parks & recreation, relocated and expanded the Godeke Library and made the Lake Alan Henry pipeline a priority - we broke ground on the pipeline from the lake on March 23.
There has been some good news during these bad times. Contractors eager to keep their crews working have consistently completed bids below estimates – saving taxpayers millions. The acquisition of Xcel’s retail operation will save taxpayers money, eliminate the unsightly and costly duplication of materials and manpower and greatly reduce the cost to redevelop downtown Lubbock.
While a city councilman, I championed the Gateway project that used public/private funds for the infrastructure needed to meet the demands of Lubbock’s rapid growth in Lubbock. This good news and more is detailed in my First Term Report to the Taxpayers that is included with this letter.
Some political pundits predict I’ll win the May election for a second term, but I’ll never take the office of Mayor of Lubbock for granted, any more than I would your support and vote. I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your continued support.
Whatever you contribute financially will be used wisely, and will help make an important difference.
Sincerely your Mayor,

Tom Martin
